Separate levy to fund regional transit

January 18, 2019 news

Niagara homeowners will be asked to chip in an extra $36 each for Niagara Regional Transit this year.

On top of the Region’s $274-million in spending proposed in this year’s capital budget, regional councillors are being asked to consider a separate $14-million levy to provide enough capital to transform the pilot bus project into a true regional transit system, said acting CAO Ron Tripp.

“This effectively has the Region with skin in the game. This brings us on par in terms of our financial commitment and responsibility to it,” he said.

The levy, which will cost the owners of an average Niagara home valued at $267,000 about $3 a month, includes the purchase of 14 new buses.
